Web 2.0 is here in a big way - check out the list of sites!

Everyone is talking about Web 2.0 this year.

What is it? What is Web 2.0.

Nothing hammers a point home like a few - or a lot of really good examples.

Somebody has put together a long list of the best Web 2.0 websites. The name of each one listed is a hyperlink to the site.

Great idea!

There is lots more information on the website too - about CSS tools, Ajax tools, and so forth.

Software Development in the Real World: Best of the Best Web 2.0 Web Sites: New and improved sites that make the web their platform, provide users a way of interacting with each other, and organize and categorize their content are perfect examples of Web 2.0.

If anything says, Modern Web - it is Web 2.0 technology and techniques: rating, tagging, AJAX, and so forth.

Now that IE7 and Firefox 7 are out, people can be enjoying the Modern Web like never before.

As a very recent example of how Web 2.0 is catching on, Apple's pay subscription website .Mac has just rolled out an AJAX-based web mail client. I glanced at the source, and it uses Scriptaculous for its fancy AJAX/DHTML features.

This web-based web mail client looks just like Apple's Mail.app desktop GUI client application. The similarity is uncanny!

an IE7 Quick Review I just read

I just learned early this morning that IE7 has been released. I am not even sure exactly when it was released, though I gather it was sometime within the past couple days.

Consequently, I have been scrambling to read up on it a little bit before I run out the door this morning.

A comprehensive look at Internet Explorer 7 has been put together by Willy Sudiarto Raharjo in his blog here on blogspot.

Here is his post about IE 7: My Personal Blog: IE7 Quick Review. It is packed with screenshots, observations, and blow-by-blow descriptions of what upgrading was like.

There were a couple of surprises, and he explains what those were and how to deal.

Internet Explorer 7: checklists

IE 7 has at long last been released.

Arriving over four years after IE 6 was released at the beginning of the 2000s, IE changes the way CSS works in IE to be more correct. It changes its user-agent string. It adds new features for: improved printing - and introduces tabbed browsing and RSS feed display.

Here are the checklists that consumers, IT workers, and web designers/programmers are supposed to read.

Internet Explorer 7 checklists:
Whether you're a consumer, developer, or IT professional, we've created the below checklists to make sure Internet Explorer 7 is compatible with your favorite websites and applications.

Sounds like some single-browser web users out there will have some homework to do this weekend.

So long as they are testing their websites with IE 7, they might as well test them with Firefox too.

At least now IE will be a little closer to Firefox in the way it renders pages that use CSS in an effort to make pages look nice.

Microsoft to Push Out IE 7 This Month - Security Fix

Microsoft joins the Modern Web sometime this month with a long-awaited release of Internet Explorer 7.

Microsoft to Push Out IE 7 This Month - Security Fix:
A Microsoft spokesperson declined to say whether IE7 would be released tomorrow, saying only that it would be released sometime this month.

IE 7 includes tabbed browsing, built in RSS feeds, as well as tools to help users spot phishing Web sites that mimic banks and trusted e-commerce companies to steal personal and financial data.

It is actually a rather modest improvement over IE 6. The CSS 2.1 support will still have a ways to go before it gets finished. From what I have read, it still will not catch up with Firefox 1.5 on CSS 2.1.

Firefox 2.0 will likely be coming out this month too. So by November, IE might actually wind up further behind that before.

CSS 2.1 is not the end game by any means either. CSS 3, which will probably get finished year now, will be the next W3C recommendation that web browser makers will be pressured to adhere too.

Firefox already has a small amount of support for new CSS 3 features.

Still, any improvement is a good thing. And this will get web developers who lazily only tested their pages, sites, and applications with only one browser.

Guess what guys? Now there is another browser replacing the one you tested with, and it works differently! And a lot of customers might all be upgrading to it the same week, less than a month from now!!

Interesting times. Interesting times....
